About Dr. Paulo Behar

I am an Infectious Disease Specialist with over three decades of experience dedicated to comprehensive patient care.
Since 1991, I have practiced at two major tertiary hospitals in Porto Alegre, RS, providing both outpatient and inpatient care for the management of complex infectious and parasitic diseases.
My professional journey is built on the three pillars of clinical care, teaching, and research. I have been a Professor of Infectious Diseases at UFCSPA since 1994, holding a Master’s degree in Health Sciences (Microbiology) from UFRJ and a PhD in Medicine (Pulmonology) from UFRGS. This academic foundation informs my clinical practice, which prioritizes meticulous diagnostic reasoning—focusing on detailed patient history and physical examination—and the ethical and rational use of anti-infectives.
I take great pride in actively contributing to the training of future generations of physicians. I serve as a preceptor for the Infectious Disease Department at Hospital Nossa Senhora da Conceição and at UFCSPA, specifically at its teaching hospital, Santa Casa de Misericórdia de Porto Alegre. In addition to residency preceptorship, I coordinate teaching incentive projects (such as the PID), developing innovative tools like "Dynamic Cases in Infectious Diseases," which help medical students apply their knowledge in a compassionate and empathetic manner.
My Commitment
In my private practice and through telehealth consultations, I provide care for patients across various areas of infectious diseases, with a special focus on:
-
Care for Immunocompromised Patients: Management of infections in oncology (cancer) patients, transplant recipients, or those using biologics and immunomodulators.
-
Chronic and Viral Diseases: Diagnosis and treatment of HIV/AIDS (including prophylaxis such as PEP), viral hepatitis, and HTLV infections.
-
Travel Medicine: Guidance and chemoprophylaxis for travelers, with a specific focus on malaria prevention in endemic areas.
-
Community-Acquired and Healthcare-Associated Infections: Precise diagnosis of febrile illnesses, respiratory and urinary tract infections, and exanthematous diseases (such as mumps).
My commitment, which is also reflected in the content I share on my blog, is to provide evidence-based care guided by the principles of beneficence and patient safety.
